Teachers recharge in Ukraine as school considers solar energy

Our goals:

An update from Principal Iryna Steshyts at Academy of Wisdom in Bucha, Ukraine

We, the staff of Academy of Wisdom, would like to express our gratitude for your generosity and support. Thanks to you, our teachers had the unique opportunity to climb Mt. Hoverla, the highest mountain in Ukraine. This trip not only provided us with unforgettable experiences, but also became a source of inspiration and energy for our future work with our students.

We would also like to thank you for the funds provided for teachers experiencing financial difficulties. Your help came at the most needed moment and was a true blessing for many of us. Our teachers were able to feel support and care, which is extremely important in difficult times.

Russia attacks Ukrainian infrastructure

The latest news: Russia is attacking Ukraine in different regions, not only on the border, not only our military, but also civilians. In previous years we had power outages due to attacks on power distribution facilities. Since then we’ve updated our generator to teach children during times without electricity. We were without electricity for four days in December, 2022. According to the news, about 60% of distribution power facilities in the Kyiv region were destroyed during that time. Now, Russia is systematically destroying generator facilities as well.

Solar panels may be an immediate need

We see an increasing amount of news about installing solar panels on schools in nearby cities Irpin, Chernihiv, even Bucha, and in hospitals. Considering the current situation and prices for electricity, we began preparing a project to install solar panels that will make our school more resilient. Before we thought of this as a good but distant development opportunity. Now it looks like a necessity. We believe that God will preserve us. •

Year-end 2024’s Not Forgotten campaign will support educators and their students in Ukraine. Join us by giving today!
