A story from Ukraine: Academy of Wisdom serving 218 students in Bucha
Four years into the war between Russia and Ukraine, Russia recently fired at least 800 drones targeting 20 regions of Ukraine in May, killing at least six people and wounding dozens, including children, in one of the longest attacks since the war began.
“This attack was very close to us,” said Iryna Steshyts, principal of TSI partner Academy of Wisdom in Bucha, Ukraine. “On Wednesday we heard loud explosions, but the Bucha area itself was not affected, and everything is safe on the grounds of the school.”
The past few months have been emotionally difficult for everyone at Academy of Wisdom, and Steshyts says the accumulated stress and anxiety are affecting people.
“The teachers are tired and on the verge of burnout,” she said. “We are also hearing more about difficulties in families and health issues—the consequences of living with war and stress for so long.”
Steshyts says the staff’s greatest blessing is the people around them. “Our wonderful students and their grateful families are a source of inspiration for us and remind us why we continue to [go to] work every day,” she said. •
